Varuna – Aditi’s Son
- Varuna is the son of Aditi and Kasyapa, born as one of the Adityas, but later came to rule the night sky. For this reason, he is also considered an Asura. The native is unbiased and helps everyone.
- Mitra and Varuna are often invoked together in the Rigveda. Refer to the story of Mitra in the context of Anuradha and Urvashi. Triangular love stories may also be associated with them.
- Varuna governs the cosmic waters (Akasa Ganga), clouds, the sky, and the earth. The native works like a king and does not compromise easily. Mitra rules the day and is associated with jobs, earning money, and building connections, while Varuna rules the night, symbolized by the dark or empty Sun. This signifies activities like spying, drinking, prostitution, corruption, and deceit. Varuna also holds a noose, representing punishment for such deeds or for punishing those who commit them.
- Varuna enforces punishment without mercy for bad deeds, reporting to management or courts, but shows leniency if the wrongdoer is remorseful. The native may work as a spy or employee constantly monitoring good and bad actions and punishing offenders.
- Varuna is regarded as the equivalent of 100 mystics, healers, physicians, or exorcists. The native may either require such support or be one of these figures.
- Varuna is regarded as head of Nagas. He rules the netherworld (underworld).
The story of how Varuna lost kingship and Indra ascended to the throne involves the demon Vritrasura and a significant shift in cosmic order.
Varuna’s Kingship: In the Vedic age, Varuna was initially considered the king of gods, ruling over the cosmos, including the waters, natural law, and cosmic order (Rta). He was highly revered for his wisdom and authority over both the moral and physical realms.
Rise of Indra: Indra’s rise to prominence occurred due to his heroic deeds, particularly the slaying of Vritrasura, a powerful demon who obstructed rivers and brought drought to the world. Vritra was a mighty asura who had imprisoned all the waters of the world, causing suffering to humans and gods alike.
Vritrasura’s Battle: Indra, the god of thunder and storms, was chosen to confront Vritrasura. Armed with a divine weapon, the Vajra (thunderbolt), which was crafted from the bones of the sage Dadhichi, Indra waged a fierce battle. After a long struggle, he successfully killed Vritra, releasing the waters and restoring life to the world.
Shift in Power: After the defeat of Vritrasura, Indra was celebrated for his valor and became the king of the gods. The slaying of the demon marked his ascension as the chief deity of the Rigvedic pantheon, surpassing Varuna. Indra’s control over rain and storms made him central to the agricultural well-being of society, and he was seen as the protector of both gods and humans.
In summary, Indra’s victory over Vritrasura shifted the divine order, elevating him to kingship while Varuna, though still important as the god of cosmic waters and morality, receded into a more specific role.

- Harischandra promised to sacrifice the child born during the Yajna (ritual) to Varuna. After a few days, a son was born, and he was named Rohit. Immediately, Varuna asked Harischandra if he would fulfill his promise.
- Harischandra requested some time before making the sacrifice. He continued to delay the sacrifice until Rohit reached a suitable age. Rohit, fearing the impending sacrifice, fled his home and roamed the forests.
- Upon learning of the situation, Varuna cursed Harischandra with a disease called Jalada (water-related ailment). While roaming the forests, Rohit encountered Vishwamitra. Vishwamitra advised Rohit to continue wandering in the forest for another year. After a year, Rohit met Vishwamitra again.
- In the forest, there was a hermit named Ajigarta who had three sons. Rohit approached Ajigarta and, in exchange for one of his sons, promised to give 100 cows. Ajigarta agreed to provide his middle son, Sunahsepa, who was suitable for the sacrifice.
- Harischandra agreed to sacrifice Sunahsepa instead of his own son. Varuna accepted this arrangement since a Brahmin boy was being sacrificed in place of a Kshatriya (warrior) son.
- Sunahsepa, upon learning about the sacrifice, prayed to the deities, and managed to escape from the sacrificial altar, running back into the forest. Vishwamitra, seeing Sunahsepa, offered to adopt him. Vishwamitra’s other sons did not agree to this, as they did not want to give away their father’s spiritual power and wealth to someone else. Vishwamitra, angered by their refusal, cursed his sons. Eventually, everyone agreed, and the matter was resolved peacefully.
